Ocean Addicts

oceanaddicts.com.au

A local surf shop, now #1 on Google for every product that matters.

  • #1Google rankings across the range

The Ocean Addicts website

My local surf shop, taken online in 2015. I built the store, wrote the product pages and did the SEO. The big lines now come up first on Google. Ten years on, we still work together.

Where it started

August 2015. A small site about the store, a few products listed, no shop and no online sales at all. Nothing before — so everything since is new.

What I did

Built the store and the theme, then worked out a repeatable recipe for product content and kept refining it. First year steady, second year the SEO was already strong, and by the third we were dominating. Search a big product by name and we came up first. I only did that work for products worth it — boards, kite gear, the high-value lines. Shop and category pages were built to rank in their own right.

What happened

Best month was December 2022 at $68k online alone. Around 2020–2022 the site ran near 6,000 visitors a month, almost all organic.

The Mirror Mirror website

In Australian cosmetic medicine, many of the words people search with cannot appear in public-facing copy. Type four letters of a restricted term and the search suggests the compliant wording instead.

The problem

Strict advertising rules limit the brand names and treatment terms this directory can publish. People still need to find practitioners using the words they know.

From the fourth character of a restricted term, the search suggests the compliant wording. The results use that wording too: familiar input, compliant output.

Verified means verified

Practitioners apply through a long form and upload their documents. Their profile stays invisible. The owner reviews the documents and approves each application by hand; only then do the verified badge and public profile go live.

Finding someone

By name, treatment, keyword, distance from you, or visually on the map. Over 50 services.

My part

Lead developer and designer, from idea to launch. I led the design and build, coordinating the owner, a branding agency, the legal team and another developer. He wrote the term-matching code. The agency supplied the logo, colours, homepage direction and photos. Launched December 2025.

The Permaculture Course Online website

An online permaculture course with a team of teachers and a student community. I handled crowdfunding, filming and editing, the course platform, the community and the workflows behind it.

I’m also the course’s front desk: I answer student emails in Help Scout and pass course submissions on to the teachers for review.

The whole thing

The Permaculture Design Certificate, online, with a team of teachers and a student community. Co-founded in 2016. Crowdfunding, filming, 100+ lessons cut and edited, the platform, the forums, assignment and support workflows, memberships and access levels, weekly payments, and the automated email marketing behind all of it.

The funnel

Almost everyone starts on the free course. The homepage converts at around 5% to signup, the full email sequence averages 41.9% opens across ten years, and 7–9% of free students upgrade to the paid certificate. That sequence is the business.

Worth a mention

Two things that went better than planned.

1.6M+views on YouTube, no ad spend

A short clip about a pump that runs on gravity alone.

Filmed and cut for the permaculture course. No promotion behind it — the algorithm just kept handing it to people.

$12kin pre-sales, in two weeks

A trailer, a simple page, and two weeks of sharing it by hand.

We had an idea for an online permaculture course, some old footage, and not much else. So I cut this trailer, put it on a simple page with an early-bird offer, and shared it myself — one post at a time, in the groups where people already cared about this. Two weeks later, $12k had come in. That paid for the cameras and the time to film the course properly, and we opened on the day we'd promised.

About using AI

AI does the groundwork. We make the calls.

I use it for scaffolding, first drafts and repetitive work.

I choose the architecture, review the output and test what ships.

If doing it directly is simpler, I do it directly.

Tools I use: Claude and ChatGPT.

How we can start

Two ways to start small.

Let me solve a problem.

A landing page that doesn't convert. A checkout that loses people. A launch that keeps slipping. Tell me what's stuck and I'll quote it as one piece of work — so we both find out how working together feels before anyone commits to more.
